Gujarat Massacre 2002

On February 27th 2002 a train of Hindus returning from Ayodhya was reportedly attacked by a mob of Muslims in Godhra, Gujarat. What followed was not simply a retaliation to this incident; it was a full scale massacre supported by the authorities of the Gujarat state. It was not mere rioting; it was a crime against humanity meticulously organized by militant nationalist groups operating under the aegis of the state government. Neither the police nor the government officials did anything to prevent and stop the carnage, rape, looting, destruction of property and mass displacement of people.

Despite of condemnation in India and beyond its borders, the government of India and the Gujarat state government have failed to respond to the grave crimes committed in Gujarat and instead have resorted to denial. No substantial change has occurred in Gujarat. For its part, the international community has not yet recognized the nature and depth of the violence either.
